At the start

A day for Pantani, over the Barbotto

Richie Porte holds the maglia rosa by 1:42 from Arroyo, with Robert Kiserlovski third and Carlos Sastre eighth at 7:09, the first of the pre-race favourites anywhere in the standings. Today is 222 kilometres to Cesenatico, Marco Pantani's home town, over the Perticara and then the Barbotto he grew up training on. It is the last hilly day before the race turns north.

How it was won

  1. 60 km to go

    Karpets attacks the pink group

On the Perticara, the first ranked climb of a day dedicated to Pantani, Vladimir Karpets rides away from the favourites. Liquigas chase; the Russian builds two minutes anyway.

  2. 40 km to go

    The Barbotto decides it

The seventeen-man escape splinters on the Barbotto, and Karpets, caught between two races, begins losing ground to both. The maglia rosa group tops the climb 6:15 down.

  3. 2 km to go

    Lewis goes at 1,500 metres

The finale in Cesenatico is a mess of attacks, catches and re-formings. Craig Lewis slips clear inside the last kilometre and a half, and for a few hundred metres looks like the winner.

  4. At the line

    Belletti, at home

Inside the last hundred metres Manuel Belletti comes past the American on his own streets for his first win of the season. Henderson takes second, Mayoz third, and Lewis is swamped back to eighth.
