At the start

The morning after

David Millar is in the maglia rosa and will not be thinking about it. Wouter Weylandt died on the descent of the Passo del Bocco yesterday afternoon, the first rider to be killed in a Grand Tour since Fabio Casartelli in 1995. There is a 216-kilometre stage from Genoa to Livorno on the road book, and the race has decided that it will not be raced. The riders will ride it, and nothing else.

How it was won

   Ten kilometres each

   There is no racing today. Each team takes the front for ten kilometres and then hands it over, and the whole peloton moves up the Tuscan coast as one body through a corridor of quiet applause.

2. 2At the line

   Livorno, together

   Three kilometres out, Garmin-Cervelo finish their turn and pull aside, and Weylandt's Leopard Trek teammates come to the front and ride the last of it ten metres clear of everyone else. They cross the line, climb onto the podium, and get down again as quickly as they can.
