The road

At the start

One climb, and a race that will not settle

Nibali leads by 1:26 from Evans and 2:46 from Urán; Santambrogio was dropped on Andrate and has fallen to sixth. Seven riders left the race yesterday, Taylor Phinney and Matthew Goss among them. Today is two hundred and nineteen kilometres across the plain with one category-four climb, the Crosara, sixteen kilometres from Vicenza.

How it was won

1. 116 km to go

   Visconti jumps on the Crosara

   Rubiano shatters what is left of the break on a steep ramp, Di Luca leaps out of the bunch after him, and then Giovanni Visconti crosses to both of them and rides straight past. Two kilometres from the summit he is alone; the peloton crests thirty seconds down.

2. 28 km to go

   Down the Crosara, and eight flat kilometres

   He takes the technical descent at the head of the race and reaches the bottom with twenty-five seconds — and then a flat, exposed run to Vicenza. In his favour: the climb has cut the peloton to pieces, and nobody behind is organising anything.

3. 3At the line

   Vicenza, by nineteen seconds

   Three seconds come off in three kilometres, and then the road starts twisting again, which suits him too. Visconti holds nineteen seconds to the line — his second stage of this Giro and Movistar's third in a row — with Navardauskas winning the sprint behind.
