The road
At the start
Cavendish in pink, a team race today
Mark Cavendish took Naples on the line and wears the maglia rosa on Ischia this morning, eight seconds up on Viviani and twelve on Bouhanni. None of which will survive the afternoon: seventeen and a half kilometres of team time trial, undulating and technical, and the general classification riders start settling debts they cannot repay later.
How it was won
- 9 km to go
Sky lose men and gain time
Danny Pate's gears fail him early and Christian Knees is dropped soon after, yet at the intermediate check Sky are still faster than anybody in 10:12, Wiggins on the front of a shrinking line.
- At the line
Five men and a pink jersey
They cross with only five riders left, and they cross fastest: 22:05 for the seventeen kilometres from Ischia to Forio. Salvatore Puccio, in his first Giro, takes the maglia rosa; Bradley Wiggins, second on the same time, has quietly taken seconds off every rival he has.
