The road

At the start

Out of the rest day, through Parma

The first rest day is over and the Giro comes back on flat ground: 174 kilometres from Modena straight through Parma to the spa town of Salsomaggiore, with one short climb at Bagni di Tabiano to squeeze the sprinters and a hairpinned descent into town. Cadel Evans holds pink by 57 seconds from Rigoberto Urán. Nacer Bouhanni has two stages and the points jersey, and with Kittel gone he is the man to beat.

   Bandiera and Fedi shake hands

   After almost the whole day in front the two escapees are caught with 9km left, and Sky suddenly appear, Cataldo drilling the only climb of the day until the bunch is one long strung-out line.

2. 2At the line

   Farrar goes down, Bouhanni goes by

   The front group is barely ten strong when Tyler Farrar carries too much speed into one of Salsomaggiore's tight corners and slides across the road. It leaves a three-up sprint: Bouhanni takes Nizzolo's wheel, jumps at 75 metres and wins his third stage of the Giro.
