At the start
Through the Barolo vineyards
The first individual time trial, and the first day nobody can hide behind anybody: 42 kilometres out of Barbaresco through the Barolo vineyards, over the Boscasso and down a technical descent into the finish. Cadel Evans defends pink from Rigoberto Urán at 57 seconds and Rafał Majka at 1:10, with Nairo Quintana 1:45 back. Eleven days of mutual marking end here, whether the favourites like it or not.

De Gendt's dry ride unravels
Thomas De Gendt is one of the last men to ride the course dry and rockets through the first check 24 seconds up on everyone — then suspects a puncture on the climb and stops for a bike change that costs him the day.

The rain turns Barolo lethal
The sky opens and the technical descent becomes a minefield. Tobias Ludvigsson runs wide, clips the barriers and is flung over the top of them, falling several feet before coming to rest; behind, Ivan Basso crashes his Giro out of the top ten.

Through the vineyards Rigoberto Urán finds the ride of his life, the first individual time trial win of his career, and Colombia has the maglia rosa at the Giro's halfway point.
