The road
At the start
The Zoncolan has the last word
The final mountain day, and it ends on the Monte Zoncolan: 10.9 kilometres averaging over eleven per cent, reached across the Passo del Pura and the Sella Razzo. Nairo Quintana leads by 3:07 and the maglia rosa looks settled, so the race is for what is left โ Fabio Aru at 3:48, Pierre Rolland at 5:26, Domenico Pozzovivo at 6:16 โ and for a stage win on the hardest climb in Italy.
How it was won
- 76 km to go
A twenty-man break on a short leash
The peloton is unwilling to let this move go: with 91km covered the twenty leaders have just 3:21, enough to tempt Chalapud and Wellens into bridging across.
- 63 km to go
Rogers throws his bike down
Cataldo leads over the Passo del Pura, and on the descent that follows Rogers suffers a mechanical, flinging his bike to the ground and his hands into the air before chasing his way back to the break.
- 41 km to go
Rolland tests the podium
As the maglia rosa group nears the top of Sella Razzo, Europcar mass at the front and launch Rolland at Aru's third place. Movistar and Astana snuff it out before it can breathe.
- 11 km to go
Eight minutes at the foot of the Zoncolan
The break reaches the bottom of the 10.9km wall with eight minutes in hand โ a stage-winning lead. The only question left is which of them survives it.
- 6 km to go
Rogers hits the front
With six kilometres of the Zoncolan left, Rogers goes to the front and starts lashing out at the fans pressing into his path. Only Bongiorno and Pellizotti can hold him, and at the 5km banner Pellizotti is gone.
- 3 km to go
The man in the rainbow jersey
Bongiorno attacks hard at 3.7km and Rogers claws him back. Then, three kilometres from the summit, a spectator in world champion's colours reaches out to push the Italian along โ and almost puts him on the ground instead. The duel of the day ends there, decided by a stranger's hand.
- At the line
Rogers alone on the Zoncolan
The Australian rides the last ramps alone for his second stage of the race. Behind, Poels drags Urรกn clear of Aru, Majka, Rolland and Pozzovivo, and the two Colombians come to the summit side by side, Quintana in pink and looking the fresher.
