At the start

The morning after Montecassino

The crash at the roundabout in Cassino has emptied the race. Joaquim Rodríguez does not start, Giampaolo Caruso and Janez Brajkovič are already gone, and ten riders are out after six days. Michael Matthews keeps pink and now leads Cadel Evans by 21 seconds with Rigoberto Urán a minute further back. Today runs 211 kilometres to Foligno over one climb, the Valico della Somma — the last flat finish before the Apennines.

How it was won

  1. 39 km to go

An ultimatum on the Valico della Somma

Orica-GreenEdge ride just hard enough on the only climb of the day to leave the sprinters' teams a choice: commit now, or lose the last chance of a win before Tuesday.

  2. At the line

    Bouhanni finds the gap

Isolated after the final corner, Bouhanni takes Mezgec's wheel and then squeezes up the inside along the barriers, elbow to elbow, to beat Nizzolo by inches in Foligno.
