The road
At the start
Not enough sprinters left
The Mortirolo rearranged everything: Alberto Contador leads by 4:02, and it is Mikel Landa in second with his own leader Fabio Aru third at 4:52. Today crosses into Switzerland, 134 kilometres to Lugano over one early climb and a small rise into town. There are barely enough fast men left to organise a sprint — Greipel, Matthews and Henderson all went home rather than ride the time trial.
How it was won
- 25 km to go
Hansen tries it again
On an unranked rise twenty-five kilometres out, Adam Hansen — riding his eleventh consecutive Grand Tour — attacks with Gretsch, then attacks Gretsch. He holds a narrow lead until the Swiss border.
- At the line
Modolo's second in Lugano
Paolini goes at three kilometres on roads he trains on and is caught in sight of the lake. Lampre-Merida have three men left in the lead-out, and Sacha Modolo does not need a fourth.
