The road
At the start
Milan, and Nizzolo's last chance
Alberto Contador rides towards Milan with 2:02 on Fabio Aru and 3:14 on Mikel Landa, and the shoulder he put out on stage six has held. Alessandro Petacchi did not finish yesterday. Today is 178 flat kilometres over the rice fields and seven laps of a circuit past the Vigorelli velodrome — and Giacomo Nizzolo, who leads the points classification on second places, has run out of stages.
How it was won
- 93 km to go
Three BMC riders and a red jersey
Rather than contest the Novara sprint, BMC send three men clear so Philippe Gilbert can take the full points uncontested. Only Richeze is quick enough to go with them.
- At the line
Keisse outfoxes Milan
Keisse and Durbridge slip away on the narrow roads after the first passage of the line, take forty seconds, and the sprinters' teams never quite agree on how to close it. Durbridge has to lead out; the six-day man comes over the top of him. Behind, Alberto Contador rolls in to win the Giro d'Italia.
