How it was won

  1. 34 km to go

    The wind finds the break

Bandiera takes the last sprint of the day with 34 kilometres left, but the head and side winds off the Maremma are already eating the escape alive and the peloton is lined out behind them.

  2. 2 km to go

The crash that shapes the Giro

In sight of the line the sprint detonates and riders are strewn across the road. Among them is the maglia rosa: Alberto Contador goes down and gets up with a subluxated left shoulder, and will ride the next fortnight with it strapped.

  3. At the line

    Greipel ahead of the chaos

Henderson delivers him onto the long finishing straight in Castiglione della Pescaia, Greipel hits out early and is clear of the carnage behind — his first Giro stage since Brescia in 2010.
