Stage 17

The road

At the start

Yates's lead down to 56 seconds

Rohan Dennis won the Rovereto time trial, but the number that matters is Tom Dumoulin's: he took 1:15 out of the maglia rosa and now sits 56 seconds back. Thibaut Pinot lost over three minutes and his podium place. Today is a lull before the Alps — 156 kilometres from Riva del Garda through the lake country to Iseo, one categorised climb and a flat run-in. Viviani wants a fourth.

How it was won

1. 135 km to go

   Bora blow the race apart

Bora-Hansgrohe drill the front over the climb and the peloton splits to pieces; Froome and López are briefly caught out before regaining contact.

2. 2At the line

   Viviani's fourth win

In torrential rain on slick roads Viviani holds nothing back to beat Bennett in Franciacorta, equalling four stage wins in a single Giro.
