At the start

Polanc in pink, the Alps waiting

Cesare Benedetti won from the break at Pinerolo and Jan Polanc's escape put a second UAE rider in the maglia rosa, Roglič second at 4:07 on numbers nobody believes yet. Kluge, Nizzolo and Knox do not start. Today it becomes real: 196 kilometres and 5,187 metres of climbing to Ceresole Reale, finishing on a road the Giro has never climbed, up to Lago Serrù above two thousand metres.

How it was won

1. 1142 km to go

   The break of the race

   On the Colle del Lys the most dangerous move of the whole Giro clips away — Mollema and Zakarin among a knot of Trek riders who will drive it for nearly five hours.

2. 266 km to go

   López opens the afterburners

   Sixty-six kilometres out Astana lift the pace and López attacks again, shattering Roglič's defences, cracking Chaves and burying what was left of Jungels' Giro.

3. 316 km to go

   Movistar's mountain time trial

   On the first-ever ascent of the road to Lago Serrù, Landa attacks with 16km to go and links with his Movistar men; their three-up drive is briefly too much even for Roglič, as Yates slides backwards.

4. 44 km to go

   Nibali probes

   Four kilometres from the summit Nibali throws in a stinging acceleration that rattles the GC group, before settling to mark Roglič all the way to the line.

5. 52 km to go

   Zakarin's winning move

   From the front group Ilnur Zakarin attacks with 1.9km to go; Mollema cannot hold and Nieve is shed for good, the Russian riding clear for a memorable win.

6. 6At the line

   Zakarin wins at Lago Serrù

   Zakarin takes the Giro's first summit finish alone, while up the road Landa's raid has pulled back precious seconds on the men in the GC fight.
