At the start

Carapaz in pink by seven seconds

Richard Carapaz rode away on the Colle San Carlo and came down into Courmayeur with the maglia rosa; Roglič is seven seconds behind him, Nibali at 1:47, and Movistar now have two men in the top five. Today borrows Il Lombardia's roads for 232 kilometres to Como — the Madonna del Ghisallo, the Colma di Sormano, then the steep Civiglio nine kilometres out and a technical descent after it.

How it was won

  1. 58 km to go

    Onto the Ghisallo

Drawing on the Lombardia parcours, the race hits the climb to the cyclists' chapel; Mitchelton-Scott lift the pace and the peloton splits on the run-in, Roglič already shorn of a couple of teammates.

  2. 9 km to go

    Nibali attacks on the Civiglio

On the steep Civiglio Nibali takes flight; Carapaz is straight onto him, but Roglič — spinning a low gear on a borrowed bike after a mechanical — cannot follow and crests fifteen seconds down.

  3. 5 km to go

    Roglič into the barriers

On the technical descent Nibali glides away while Roglič misjudges a right-hander and slides into the roadside barriers. He remounts, but his once-secure favourite's status has taken another heavy blow.

  4. At the line

    Cataldo wins in Como

Dario Cataldo out-kicks Cattaneo from their day-long break; behind, Roglič loses forty seconds and Carapaz's overall lead swells to 47.
