At the start

Bernal in pink, and a day to breathe

Egan Bernal has the maglia rosa and the white jersey after that violent burst up the dirt at Campo Felice, fifteen seconds clear of Evenepoel and twenty-one of Vlasov. Matej Mohorič is among four more who left the race yesterday. Today is only 140 kilometres to Foligno with one fourth-category climb on it — the last easy day, because Tuscany's white roads come next.

How it was won

  1. 40 km to go

    Bora cull the sprinters

The German team drive the Cantoniera and the Valico della Somma specifically to shed Sagan's rivals, and it works: Groenewegen goes first, then Merlier and the European champion Nizzolo. The break is swallowed before the top.

  2. At the line

    Foligno

Sagan takes Molano's wheel around the final bend and comes off it to hold Gaviria at bay, moving into the maglia ciclamino. Earlier, at the second intermediate, Evenepoel had beaten Bernal to trim the GC gap by a single second.
