At the start

Ravenna to Verona, flat as a table

A day for the fast men, and a literary pilgrimage besides: the race leaves Dante's tomb in Ravenna on the 700th anniversary of his death and finishes in the city of his exile. Bernal still leads Vlasov by 45 seconds. Eight riders climbed off yesterday, among them Alessandro De Marchi, who wore pink a week ago. Two hundred kilometres of Po plain, and only the wind.

How it was won

  1. 131 km to go

    The Fuga duel

Rivi beats Marengo at Ferrara in a three-man break that is racing less for the stage than for the prize awarded to whoever spends the most kilometres out front — Pellaud already past 500.

  2. At the line

    Eleven seconds, then first

Affini looks certain to win with 300 metres left. Giacomo Nizzolo — beaten into second place in Giro sprints eleven times — refuses to accept it, drags himself into the Italian's slipstream and kicks past him on the line in Verona.
