The road

At the start

Out of the rest day, into the Marche

Blockhaus rearranged everything except the jersey. Juan Pedro López still leads, but by twelve seconds from João Almeida, fourteen from Romain Bardet, fifteen from Richard Carapaz and twenty from Jai Hindley; Simon Yates lost eleven minutes and his Giro. Today runs flat along the Adriatic for a hundred kilometres, then turns inland for three short climbs and a passage through Filottrano, Michele Scarponi's home town.

How it was won

1. 184 km to go

   The hills start shedding sprinters

   De Marchi takes maximum points from the break on the first categorised climb, and behind him Caleb Ewan is the first fast man to lose contact on a day designed to hurt exactly that kind of rider.

2. 268 km to go

   Cavendish goes too

   De Marchi doubles up at Recanati and Cavendish is dropped on the same rise. Further up the road Van der Poel suffers a mechanical and Carapaz has a small crash — both get back on without much trouble.

3. 341 km to go

   Through Filottrano for Scarponi

   Enormous crowds line the streets of the late Michele Scarponi's home town as the race passes through, Bais helping himself to the intermediate points for the umpteenth time.

4. 413 km to go

   The last climb dumps the fast men

   4.1km at 4.2% and Foss attacks it immediately. Alpecin peg him back trying to distance Démare and Gaviria — which works, but burns their matches and leaves Van der Poel isolated. Ineos take over through Narváez and Sivakov and the pure sprinters are gone for good.

5. 5At the line

   Girmay makes history in Jesi

   The descent into the finale is chaos — Formolo attacks, Van der Poel responds and goes clear alone, Girmay misjudges a corner then strikes out himself, Carapaz tries his luck, Carthy slips away to 1300 metres. It all comes back, and in the sprint Biniam Girmay finally beats the Dutchman who denied him on day one, the first Black African rider ever to win a Grand Tour stage.
