The road
At the start
From San Remo, on Primavera roads
The Giro begins the day in San Remo, on roads the Primavera uses in March, and heads inland: 151 kilometres to Cuneo with one third-category climb inside the opening hour and a hundred flat ones after it. Juan Pedro López holds pink by twelve seconds from Richard Carapaz and João Almeida. Romain Bardet, fourth at fourteen seconds, has been unwell since Thursday. Caleb Ewan has already gone home.
How it was won
- 97 km to go
The only climb of the day
Tagliani, the Giro's perennial breakaway man, drops away on the Colle di Nava and never sees the front of the race again. Behind, the peloton has already lost Romain Bardet, who abandoned after thirty kilometres, ill since Thursday.
- 30 km to go
A split at the back
The chase is high-tempo enough to snap the tail of the peloton with thirty kilometres left. Porte, Simon Yates and Van der Poel are all caught on the wrong side of it, though the main GC names stay clear of trouble.
- 1 km to go
Caught at 700 metres
Eenkhoorn, Van den Berg and Prodhomme are swallowed with seven hundred metres left and only Maestri holds on, riding metres ahead of a charging peloton until the final three hundred.
- At the line
Démare makes it three
Guarnieri peels off and the Frenchman launches at 175 metres, going head to head with Cavendish and holding off a fast-finishing Bauhaus. Three stages in this Giro and the ciclamino jersey looking unassailable.
