The road
At the start
Out of Pompeii, up to the Selva
The race restarts from Pompeii with Pogačar 2:40 clear of Daniel Martínez and 2:58 of Geraint Thomas — and without Olav Kooij, who won in Naples on Sunday and left the race with a fever on the rest day. Today is the third summit finish in eleven days: fifty flat kilometres, then the Camposauro and a long haul to the Bocca della Selva. Behind the maglia rosa only four riders sit within two minutes of Martínez.
How it was won
- 63 km to go
UAE finally let one go
A 27-rider move surges clear and, for the first time, Pogačar waves it away — the maglia rosa is no cannibal today, content to save his legs for the mountains ahead.
- 23 km to go
Tratnik's power bid
Jan Tratnik rips clear of the break on the valley roads and time-trials toward the Bocca della Selva alone, forcing Bardet and Paret-Peintre to organise a chase.
- 3 km to go
Paret-Peintre attacks Bardet
Three kilometres from the summit Valentin Paret-Peintre cruelly kicks away from his boyhood hero Bardet and bridges up to the fading Tratnik.
- At the line
A dream first pro win
Paret-Peintre powers past Tratnik and rides clear for his maiden professional victory, beating the very rider he grew up idolising.
