At the start

Oropa, where Pantani rode in 1999

Jhonatan Narváez took Turin and wears the first maglia rosa, three seconds up on Maximilian Schachmann and six on Tadej Pogačar, who lost the sprint but beat every one of his rivals. Today ends on the sanctuary road at Oropa, the climb where Marco Pantani came back through an entire field in 1999. Vincenzo Nibali's verdict on the day is short: it depends on what Pogačar wants to do.

How it was won

  1. 52 km to go

    Piccolo goes solo

Andrea Piccolo breaks clear of the day's escape and rides alone toward Oropa, chasing the ghost of Pantani's legendary 1999 ride up the same climb.

  2. 12 km to go

    Pogačar punctures and crashes

At the very foot of the Oropa climb a front-tyre blowout sends Pogačar sliding to the tarmac, his own car nearly on top of him. Four UAE men scramble to tow him back to the front.

  3. 4 km to go

    Pogačar erupts on Oropa

Four kilometres from the summit, on the steepest ramp, Majka peels off and Pogačar detonates, blowing Thomas and O'Connor off his wheel and riding clear to victory as thousands of tifosi roar him on.

  4. At the line

    The first maglia rosa

Pogačar crests to his first-ever Giro stage win and pulls on the pink jersey, already stamping his authority on the race.
