The road

At the start

A time trial in two halves

Thirty-three flat kilometres out of Foligno, and then a wall: the road tips up into the medieval hill town of Perugia for the last eight and finishes on Corso Vannucci. Pogačar starts 46 seconds up on Geraint Thomas, 47 on Daniel Martínez and 55 on Cian Uijtdebroeks, and insists he is not the favourite — he has won one of the last sixteen time trials he has ridden. Filippo Ganna rolls down the ramp long before him.

How it was won

  1. 7 km to go

    Ganna sets the mark

Filippo Ganna scorches the flat opening kilometres to Perugia and settles into the hot seat, 44 seconds up on Pogačar at the foot of the closing climb.

  2. At the line

    Pogačar flies up to Perugia

On the category-4 ramp into the finish Pogačar unleashes the power, wiping out that 44-second deficit to win the stage and putting two full minutes into Thomas — a brutal statement in the maglia rosa.
