At the start

The one Monument Pogačar lacks

Pavia, and 290 kilometres of Ligurian coast lie between the roll-out and the Via Roma. Tadej Pogačar has climbed this race's results sheet every year — twelfth, fifth, fourth, third — without ever solving it, and the world champion knows the Poggio is his only lever. Mathieu van der Poel, winner in 2023, has been the man on his wheel both times. Filippo Ganna, second here in 2023, arrives flying.

How it was won

1. 122 km to go

   The Cipressa

   UAE drive the Cipressa at a savage tempo, trying to soften the sprinters before the Poggio. The bunch stretches into a thin orange-led line, but the race is still all together over the top.

2. 26 km to go

   Pogačar's Poggio dig

   Halfway up the Poggio, Pogačar attacks exactly where he has dreamed of for years. Only Mathieu van der Poel can follow the acceleration; the favourites' group shatters behind.

3. 33 km to go

   Ganna claws back

   On the plunge into Sanremo, Filippo Ganna turns himself inside out and drags across to the leaders. Three men now, and Pogačar knows he is the slowest sprinter of them.

4. 4At the line

   The Via Roma sprint

   Pogačar leads it out, but on the famous straight Van der Poel surges past for a second Milan-Sanremo, Ganna a desperate second, Pogačar beaten into third in the race he wants most.
