At the start

Grand Départ in Yorkshire

The 101st Tour starts in Leeds with Chris Froome defending and every road out of the city lined several deep. Alberto Contador has come back to his best, Vincenzo Nibali has come for a Tour he has never won, and Bradley Wiggins has been left at home after a spring of friction at Sky. Today crosses the Dales over Buttertubs and Grinton Moor to Harrogate, the town Mark Cavendish's mother comes from.

1. 1112 km to go

   Voigt doesn't wait

   At the intermediate sprint the 42-year-old Jens Voigt takes the twenty points and simply keeps going. By the time Edet and Jarrier realise he has no intention of sitting up, he is gone.

2. 286 km to go

   Buttertubs splits the Tour

   Yorkshire's crowds are stacked ten deep on the moor road. Voigt takes the points at the top; behind him the peloton cracks apart and Joaquim Rodríguez is among those cut adrift on day one.

3. 31 km to go

   Cancellara's dig

   Into the final kilometre Fabian Cancellara flings himself off the front on the dip before the uphill drag to the line, and for a moment the sprint teams hesitate.

4. 4At the line

   Kittel wins, Cavendish falls

   Sandwiched between Cavendish and Coquard in the fight for the perfect line, Simon Gerrans runs out of road — and Cavendish's Tour ends on the tarmac of his mother's home town. Ahead of the wreckage Marcel Kittel powers past Sagan for the first yellow jersey.
