The road

At the start

Contador gone, Nibali back in yellow

Alberto Contador broke his tibia in a ditch on the descent of the Platzerwasel, and Vincenzo Nibali took the maillot jaune back on La Planche des Belles Filles. Froome and Contador are both home; the Italian leads Richie Porte by 2:23 and Alejandro Valverde by 2:47. Fabian Cancellara does not start today. The road out of Besançon is flat for 140 kilometres, then throws four climbs at the sprinters.

   Talansky is dropped at Charcier

   The white-jersey hope of Garmin-Sharp is spat out of the peloton before the intermediate sprint, facing a hundred kilometres alone in the wind.

2. 246 km to go

   Bakelants lights the first climb

   Fifty kilometres out the Côte de Rogna cracks the race open: Bakelants attacks, Roche and Slagter follow, and the day's original break is reduced to Elmiger alone.

3. 33 km to go

   Gallopin goes again

   He has already tried once on the last rise and been reeled in by Rogers, Sagan and Kwiatkowski. So with 2.5km left, on a small descent, the Frenchman simply attacks again — and this time the three of them look at one another instead of at him.

4. 4At the line

   Bastille week keeps giving

   Sagan refuses to close the gap and the sprinters' stalemate hands Gallopin the win in Oyonnax by a handful of metres, Degenkolb second. The man who wore yellow on Monday now has a stage too.
