How it was won

  1. 131 km to go

    Green changes hands

A brief split after the Côte de Loucrup leaves Greipel scrambling and he can only manage ninth at Pouzac. Sagan takes second — and the green jersey with it.

  2. 70 km to go

Dan Martin closes four minutes on his own

Disappointed to have missed the move, the Irishman rides a small masterpiece up the twelve kilometres of the Aspin, hauls back a four-minute deficit and makes the junction near the top — then attacks and crests it first.

  3. 41 km to go

    Majka goes on the Tourmalet

Seventeen kilometres at 7.3 per cent, the Souvenir Jacques Goddet at the summit, and with a few kilometres left Rafał Majka simply rides away from the breakaway. He crests with nearly a minute in hand and 5:45 on the yellow jersey — and a thirty-one kilometre descent to enjoy.

  4. 3 km to go

    Mollema's late dig

On the final rise into Cauterets, Bauke Mollema jumps out of the yellow jersey group and takes ten seconds on the favourites — enough to slide into the top ten as Majka drops out of it.

  5. At the line

    Majka alone in Cauterets

The Pole holds everything he took on the Tourmalet and adds a Pyrenean stage to the two he won on debut. Dan Martin, who did the most extraordinary ride of the day, has to settle for second.
