At the start

A Grand Départ in Düsseldorf

The Tour begins in Germany with fourteen kilometres against the clock, out and back through Düsseldorf, over the Rhine and around some awkward city-centre corners. Everything is level. Ahead lie 3,540 kilometres with only three true summit finishes — La Planche des Belles Filles, Peyragudes and the Izoard — and time bonuses of ten, six and four seconds on every road stage to keep the days honest.

How it was won

  1. At the line

    Thomas storms Düsseldorf

Geraint Thomas flies through the wet 14km opening time trial in Düsseldorf to take the stage and the first yellow jersey of the Tour.
