At the start

A Tour that nearly wasn't, from Nice

Nice, and the week has been spent being tested rather than training: two positives inside one team and the whole team goes home. The route is the one drawn last October, but nothing else is — it is late August, France's case numbers are rising, the roadsides will be policed. Ineos left Froome and Thomas at home to ride for Egan Bernal. Today the sprinters have the Promenade des Anglais.

How it was won

  1. 57 km to go

    Carnage in the rain

Rain slicks the roads above Nice and the peloton crashes again and again, riders sliding across the tarmac on greasy bends as the bunch fractures in the chaos.

  2. At the line

    Kristoff takes the first yellow

From the survivors of a crash-strewn opening day, Alexander Kristoff powers clear of Mads Pedersen and Cees Bol to win in Nice and pull on the first yellow jersey of the 2020 Tour.
