The road
At the start
Copenhagen, eighteen corners, no excuses
The Tour starts in a city centre: 13.2 kilometres of Copenhagen, eighteen corners, the Little Mermaid, and rain on the cobbles for the early starters. Filippo Ganna is favourite to take the first maillot jaune. Behind him the fight that matters is already on — Tadej Pogačar, winner of the last two Tours, against Primož Roglič and Jonas Vingegaard at Jumbo-Visma and an Ineos trio of Thomas, Yates and Martínez.
How it was won
- 2 km to go
Through Tivoli Gardens in the rain
The course threads wet cobbles past Tivoli Gardens, where a gently descending right-hander is worth seconds. Van der Poel storms it four seconds faster than Pedersen and briefly owns the day.
- At the line
Lampaert steals the maillot jaune
The road dries for the late starters and Yves Lampaert, a domestique with no business in yellow, puts five seconds into Van Aert and seven into Pogačar. He crosses the line in Copenhagen and cannot believe the clock — the first jersey of the 2022 Tour belongs to a Belgian workhorse.
