Aigle to Châtel, over the Pas de Morgins

Wout van Aert won on the rise to the Olympic stadium and Tadej Pogačar took four more bonus seconds behind him: yellow by 39 seconds from Jonas Vingegaard, 1:14 from Geraint Thomas. UAE lost Vegard Stake Laengen to COVID-19 yesterday morning. Today is the harder of the two Swiss days — the Col des Mosses, the Col de la Croix, then 15.4 kilometres of the Pas de Morgins ending twenty from home.

How it was won

1. 185 km to go

   Over the Mosses with the break

   The escape crests the first serious Alpine pass of the Tour with Bob Jungels among them, a rider whose career has been in the wilderness since surgery on his iliac artery.

2. 261 km to go

   One hundred kilometres an hour

   Jungels throws himself down the descent off the Col de la Croix, touching 100kph and taking risks nobody else will. He comes off the mountain alone and puts his time-trial engine to work on the valley road.

3. 325 km to go

   Pinot sets off in pursuit

   The 15.4km Pas de Morgins begins with Jungels a minute and a half clear of the break. Pinot senses the moment, jumps away from the chasers and hauls the gap down to thirty seconds, roared on by French fans lining the wide, smooth road.

4. 410 km to go

   Twenty-five seconds at the summit

   Pinot runs out of gas on the upper slopes and Jungels crests with twenty-five seconds still in hand after fifty kilometres alone. Behind, Geschke fights back for two points at the top and takes the polka-dot jersey off Cort.

5. 5At the line

   Jungels survives to Chatel

   The final kilometres tilt uphill into the ski resort and turn into a pursuit match. Jungels holds on for an emotional first win since his illness, while Castroviejo and Verona catch a spent Pinot to push him down to fourth.
