The sprinters finally get a day

San Luca gave Tadej Pogačar the yellow jersey, but only just: Remco Evenepoel, Jonas Vingegaard and Richard Carapaz are all on the same time, and Romain Bardet is six seconds away. Today is 228 kilometres across the Po valley to Turin, the first flat finish of the race. Mark Cavendish was filmed vomiting on the road to Rimini and lost 39 minutes. He needs a day like this, and so does Jasper Philipsen.

   A late crash splits the bunch

   Inside the final 3km a huge pile-up tears the peloton in two, but with the safety zone extended to 5km, Pogačar and Vingegaard are held up without losing time.

2. 2At the line

   Girmay makes history

   From the surviving forty Biniam Girmay surges up the barriers to become the first Eritrean — and first Black African — to win a Tour stage, as Carapaz inherits yellow on countback.
