The road
At the start
Cavendish in red, and a first climb
HTC-Columbia's team time trial was complete enough that their nine riders fill the first nine places overall, which is how Mark Cavendish comes to be leading the Vuelta a España. Today runs 172 kilometres through Andalucía to Marbella over the Alto de Pruna, the first classified climb of the race and the first mountains points on offer. The sprinters' teams expect it back together by the coast.

Delage takes the first mountains jersey
The Alto de Pruna is the only classified climb of the day and Mickaël Delage crosses it first from the four-man break. Mickaël Buffaz is already out — a broken collarbone in a crash just short of the climb makes him the first man to leave this Vuelta.

Hutarovich stuns them
Hondo opens it up with Petacchi behind him, Farrar comes past, Cavendish comes past Farrar — and then, in the last fifty metres, Yauheni Hutarovich comes past all of them. It is his first Grand Tour stage, and nobody in Marbella saw it coming.
