The road

At the start

Cobo in red, and a flat day after

The Angliru rearranged all of it: Juan José Cobo is in red, Froome second at twenty seconds, Wiggins third at 46 after coming apart in the last three kilometres, and Nibali eighth at 3:27. Today is 203 kilometres across La Rioja to Haro with 1,044 metres of climbing in the entire day, and the only thing in it for the general classification is bonus seconds.

How it was won

1. 110 km to go

   Froome goes for seconds

   Rosendo, the last survivor of the break, is swallowed right on the second intermediate sprint, and Chris Froome moves up through the bunch to take whatever bonus seconds are going. On the plains of La Rioja the Angliru is still being argued about.

2. 2At the line

   The roundabout in Haro

   Bennati's lead-out man Robert Wagner swings off at a roundabout 300 metres out and takes the wrong side of it. Bennati hesitates; Sagan follows Wagner, realises, and locks his brakes. Out of the chaos Juan José Haedo, who launched early because he could see it coming, emerges with a clear road.
