At the start

Leopard Trek fill the top five

Jakob Fuglsang has the first red jersey of his career with four Leopard Trek teammates on the same time behind him and Liquigas four seconds back. Sky begin the day 42 seconds down after coming apart on the seafront. The only climb comes 28 kilometres in and after that the road hugs the Mediterranean to Playas de Orihuela, rising over the last kilometre just gently enough not to bother a lead-out train.

   Hansen alone in 35 degrees

   Adam Hansen leaves the four-man break to try it on his own with the bunch already inside a minute, which is doomed and he knows it. He holds out until eighteen kilometres from the line, when a strong breeze and an HTC-led peloton put an end to it.

2. 2At the line

   Playas de Orihuela

   Vicente Reynes goes from the top of the last rise with 300 metres left and takes a gap on all the big sprinters. Chris Sutton, who has been sitting on him, comes past on his right at 75 metres, and Reynes punches his bars.
