The road
At the start
Movistar have the whole top five
Jonathan Castroviejo wears the first red jersey after Movistar's team time trial, and his team-mates fill the four places behind him; Juan José Cobo, defending the title he won last year, is four seconds down on his own leader. Today is the gentlest day of the race — a hundred and eighty kilometres around Pamplona with one category-three climb — because the route director looked at what comes next and had mercy.
How it was won
- 12 km to go
Ignatiev and Aramendia are caught
The three escapees never had more than five minutes and by the last hour they have nothing. Ignatiev sweeps up both intermediate sprints on the way, and the pair still in front are swallowed with twelve kilometres to go.
- At the line
Degenkolb, from third wheel
Lagutin's late dig comes to nothing, and in the sprint back into Pamplona a twenty-three-year-old German comes off third wheel with metres left and nips both Allan Davis and Ben Swift on the line. It is John Degenkolb's first Grand Tour stage win. It will not be his last this month.
