The road

At the start

Movistar in red, wind off the strait

Movistar won the team time trial and hold the first seven places on general classification, Jonathan Castroviejo in red. Tinkoff-Saxo gave up 19 seconds and Sky 27 before a climb was raced. Today runs 174 kilometres up the Atlantic coast out of Algeciras with one small hill early and then nothing but exposed road — which in one of Europe's windiest corners is the whole point.

   The little goat's climb

   Nathan Haas takes the first mountains jersey of the Vuelta on the oddly named Alto del Cabrito inside the opening kilometres, then drops straight back to leave four men to build five minutes on the road to Tarifa.

2. 2At the line

   Bouhanni's tenth win of the year

   A fast hour across the saltmarshes has everyone fighting for the front for fear of echelons that never come. The break is caught with 16km left and, behind Soupe, the former boxer glides to the head of the string and outpowers Degenkolb by a bike length.
