   A break of forty

   Twenty-five kilometres of attacking, and what finally goes clear on the Puerto del Oronet is less a breakaway than a split — forty riders, every team represented, and never more than a minute of advantage.

2. 218 km to go

   Desierto de las Palmas

   The GC men eye each other near the top and Dumoulin rides to the front to guard his jersey. De Marchi, Sicard and Elissonde crest with thirty seconds and a descent you have to pedal all the way down.

3. 3At the line

   Sbaragli, and no lead-out trains at all

   With Ewan, Sagan and Bouhanni all gone from the race, Degenkolb is isolated and starts from too far back. Kristian Sbaragli surges past Van der Sande for MTN-Qhubeka's first Vuelta stage.
