How it was won

  1. 127 km to go

    Chavanel triggers it, Quintana suffers

Forty kilometres of relentless attacking end on the Collado de Oseja when Chavanel goes with Oliveira and Arashiro. Behind them Nairo Quintana — 'empty', in his own doctor's word, after days of fever — is dropped on the climb.

  2. 29 km to go

Seventy kilometres an hour off the Moncayo

Poljanski crests first and is caught before the bottom. Then Nelson Oliveira takes another flyer down the mountain at 70kph, and the multiple Portuguese time trial champion turns a descender's gap into a time triallist's lead.

  3. At the line

    Lampre play it perfectly

Plaza and Conti sit in the chase group slowing everything and marking every move while their directeur drives alongside Oliveira barking through the car window. He wins alone in Tarazona by a margin that has grown all the way to the line.
