How it was won

1. 131 km to go

   De Gendt gives too much

   Thomas De Gendt has taken all three climbs of the day when he presses on alone over the San Tirso — and when his companions catch him and Bakelants and Devenyns start attacking, he is the one out the back.

2. 214 km to go

   Geniez takes the fourth climb

   The Manzaneda ends the Bakelants-Devenyns move and Alexandre Geniez collects the points at the summit — but the day's real move is still to come.

3. 312 km to go

   De la Cruz and Devenyns slip away

   Just over the crest, with 12km to go, the two best-placed men in the break take their chance and open a dozen seconds on their former companions.

4. 42 km to go

   The Movistar express

   Peter Kennaugh attacks the famous Oviedo climb to try to shake the GC race up and is simply mown down. Brambilla sprints off the front of the bunch; the favourites arrive together on Samuel Sánchez's wheel, 2:56 down.

5. 5At the line

   One misshift decides it

   Devenyns fumbles a gear at exactly the wrong moment and David de la Cruz leaps away to take the first professional win of his career on home soil — and the red jersey with it.
