At the start

Kwiatkowski in red, a day for sprinters

Alejandro Valverde jumped across to Laurens De Plus on the last ramp at Caminito del Rey and took his tenth Vuelta stage; Michał Kwiatkowski took red, fourteen seconds ahead of him. Today is 179 kilometres out of Mijas with 3,100 metres of climbing but nothing sharp near the end — the Puerto del Viento early, then a long run down to Alhaurín de la Torre. Viviani and Sagan have been waiting since Málaga.

How it was won

  1. 59 km to go

    The break holds

Six escapees stay clear over two categorised climbs, but Quick-Step keep them close for Viviani.

  2. At the line

    Viviani's first Vuelta win

Guided by Mørkøv, Viviani squeezes through the line of sprinters inside the final 200m to win in Alhaurín de la Torre.
