The road

At the start

Pogačar in white, a day for the fast men

Roglič and Pogačar rode away from everyone on Los Machucos — the young Slovenian taking a second stage win and the white jersey off López, the older one stretching his lead to 2:25 over Valverde. It has been a week since the sprinters had a clear chance, and those who survived Andorra and yesterday get one now: 188 kilometres along the Atlantic coast to Oviedo, restlessly up and down but never above 350 metres.

How it was won

1. 15 km to go

   The break is swept up

   The four remaining escapees are hauled in with 4.5km to go by a peloton racing at full throttle toward Oviedo.

2. 21 km to go

   Chaos at 900 metres

   A touch of wheels near the front triggers a huge pile-up strewn right across the wide open road, holding up the majority of the bunch and leaving only a dozen riders clear.

3. 3At the line

   Bennett threads the survivors

   As Van der Sande attacks and Richeze counters, Sam Bennett latches onto the QuickStep man's wheel and comes around both to snatch a chaotic sprint.
