At the start

The first of eight summit finishes

Fabio Jakobsen took the sprint in El Puig and Roche keeps red for a second day, two seconds up on Quintana and eight on Urán — an order nobody expects to survive the afternoon. Kruijswijk is already gone, the knee finished. Today the road tilts up from the gun, sits at a thousand metres for a hundred kilometres, then climbs to the observatory on the Alto de Javalambre.

How it was won

  1. 11 km to go

    Herrada drills the Javalambre

The three escapees start the final climb of the Alto de Javalambre eight minutes clear; Jesús Herrada sets a merciless tempo that shells Ángel Madrazo no fewer than four times.

  2. 3 km to go

    López reclaims red

Among the favourites López rips clear with 3km to go; Valverde and Roglič limit their losses to twelve seconds, but Quintana and Chaves crack and shed more than fifty.

  3. At the line

    Madrazo's miracle

Twice left for dead on the climb, Madrazo re-emerges near the flamme rouge and, with a seated 700-metre surge, rides away from a flagging Herrada for a remarkable maiden win.
