Stage 12
Córdoba
- Thursday 26 August 2021
- 175 km
- 2,018 m climbed
- Won by Magnus Cort
The road
At the start
Three times through Córdoba
Roglič's downhill lunge at Valdepeñas took three seconds off Mas and moved him to 1:56 behind Eiking, who defends red with a straight face and Guillaume Martin for company. Jasper Philipsen, twice a stage winner, did not start yesterday. Today crosses the line in Córdoba three times, over the San Jerónimo and the climb they call the 14 Per Cent.
How it was won
- 49 km to go
Roglič down again
Where the climb flattens out UAE raise the pace and a rider slides out at the front, sending Jumbo-Visma riders and Yates off the right-hand side of the road. Roglič is up quickly but has to chase through several groups with four teammates, making contact only just before the summit.
- 19 km to go
The Alto del 14 per cent
Lastra's attack four kilometres from the top finishes the last of the break, and Bardet leads Ciccone, Vine and Henao over the summit with a gap they will defend all the way down the far side.
- 2 km to go
Twelve seconds
BikeExchange and UAE burn every match on the flat run-in. The quartet is finally swept up on a roundabout with 1.3km left — and even then Vine makes them sweat with one more acceleration.
- At the line
Córdoba
A reduced bunch of forty comes back together with a kilometre to go, and Magnus Cort takes his second stage of the race from the sprint that follows.
