The road

At the start

The shortest stage, twice up the Piélago

Remco Evenepoel won on the Piornal, outsprinting Enric Mas for it, and leads him by 2:07 with Juan Ayuso a distant third. Jay Vine abandoned and the mountains jersey passed to Richard Carapaz. Today is the shortest stage of this Vuelta: two loops out of Talavera de la Reina over the Puerto del Piélago, the second summit 43 kilometres out, then a flat run home for whoever is left.

How it was won

1. 1109 km to go

   McNulty takes the points

   After a long battle to establish the move, Okamika, Caicedo and McNulty are clear and the American leads over the first ascent — though it means nothing, with Carapaz now well clear in the mountains classification.

2. 257 km to go

   Craddock's second failed raid

   The American went again on the first climb and got to within a minute, but Trek keep chipping away and he is reabsorbed with seventy-six kilometres left.

3. 343 km to go

   The break is reeled in

   Midway up the second ascent of the Piélago, McNulty is the first to go, then Caicedo, then finally Okamika — out in the break for the fifth time in this race. Landa drives it for Fred Wright.

4. 4At the line

   Pedersen's third

   Scotson's late attack is dragged back just in time. Off a sublime two-man lead-out, Pedersen launches around the final corner and wins comfortably from Wright and Vermeersch — the green jersey turning this Vuelta into a personal showcase.
