The road

At the start

Irún to Bilbao, over the Vivero twice

Primož Roglič answered Julian Alaphilippe on the Herrera, took the bonus seconds and then the stage, and rides in red with Sepp Kuss at thirteen seconds; Ineos have four riders at 26 and Remco Evenepoel is at 27. Today is longer and harder — 188 kilometres along the Basque coast, five categorised climbs in the second half, and the Alto del Vivero twice, the last summit fifteen from Bilbao.

How it was won

1. 185 km to go

   Soler bridges, Langellotti collects

   It took seventy kilometres for the move to stick. Langellotti begins his points raid over the first two climbs to put himself into the virtual mountains lead, and on this second ascent Marc Soler comes across from the bunch to join the break.

2. 244 km to go

   First time up the Vivero

   The break hits the steep, tough climb 3:45 clear. Craddock strikes out alone for five points and Langellotti follows him over for second, taking his tally to twelve. Down the other side the escape reforms — minus five riders dropped for good.

3. 324 km to go

   Stewart goes long

   With twenty-four kilometres left Jake Stewart attacks alone and builds thirty-five seconds, hitting the second and final ascent of the Vivero with a real chance. Behind, the chase group is coming apart on the gradients.

4. 415 km to go

   Soler comes from behind again

   Dropped on the lower slopes, the Spaniard claws his way back and then attacks two kilometres from the top. Eight hundred metres later he is on Stewart's wheel, and the superior climber drops the 22-year-old almost immediately.

5. 5At the line

   Spain's drought ends in Bilbao

   Soler holds a small, nervous gap all the way down into the city. It is Spain's first Grand Tour stage win in two years, and the second time in a week he has won by yo-yoing off the back and then riding away from everyone.
