At the start

Moncalvillo, and five seconds

Three days left, and Ben O'Connor is still in red by five seconds. The road through Rioja is flat until it is not: one small climb, then the Alto de Moncalvillo — 9.5 kilometres, the last five never below nine per cent and touching sixteen, with no respite anywhere on it. Roglič and Carapaz fought each other up it in 2020, and the Slovenian took thirteen seconds. Five is very little to defend on a climb like that.

How it was won

  1. 138 km to go

    A five-man break forms

After a roaring 50kph start a five-rider move including Del Toro escapes, the peloton quickly conceding four minutes on the road through Rioja.

  2. 12 km to go

    Red Bull swallow the break

Red Bull wind the pace up before the Alto de Moncalvillo, the escapees swept up just kilometres from the foot of the decisive climb.

  3. 6 km to go

    Roglič catapulted clear

Martínez and Vlasov launch Roglič 5.8km from the summit and no one can react; O'Connor can only watch the Red Bull leader ride into the virtual red jersey.

  4. At the line

    Roglič takes red at last

Roglič soloes to a third stage win atop Moncalvillo and finally seizes the overall lead, ending O'Connor's 13-day reign in red as the Australian slips 1:54 down.
