At the start

The long way to the Adriatic

Nothing moved in Cava de' Tirreni and the standings are untouched: Vinokourov, Evans at 1:12, Nibali at 1:33, Basso at 1:51. Today is 230 kilometres from Avellino across the ankle of Italy to Bitonto, the longest stage so far, and the first morning in a fortnight that the sky is not grey. Breaks, crashes and confusion have taken almost every finish from the fast men.

1. 117 km to go

   The break dies near Molfetta

   Wegelius, Dupont and Cataldo are caught with sixteen kilometres left after a day pegged out by Sky. Two kilometres later another crash at Giovinazzo takes Greg Henderson out of the sprint before it starts.

2. 2At the line

   Farrar, from a long way out

   Julian Dean opens the field up through the final left-hander and Farrar goes early and long. Sabatini, McEwen and Forster never get near him, and Dean takes third. Two stages now, and the points jersey in hand.
