At the start
Nine gone in a day, Petacchi among them
Vinokourov keeps the maglia rosa with Evans at 1:12, Nibali at 1:33 and Basso at 1:51. The Terminillo emptied the race behind them: nine riders abandoned on it, Alessandro Petacchi included, and Baden Cooke did not start today. That leaves the run to Cava de' Tirreni to Farrar, Goss and an Andre Greipel who has still not found his legs, on 187 kilometres that rarely stay flat.

The pace splits it again
Inside the last thirty kilometres HTC-Columbia wind it to sixty an hour and the bunch comes apart for the third time in a week. Evans, punctured, has to chase; Vinokourov and Nibali ride the front themselves rather than risk being caught out.

Goss is HTC's plan B
Greipel is nowhere in the last kilometre, so Matthew Goss goes up the barriers on the left and takes Pozzato and Farrar in the final two hundred metres. It is HTC-Columbia's first win of this Giro and the biggest of the Australian's career.
