Tuft in pink on the Antrim coast

Svein Tuft turned 37 yesterday and woke up in the maglia rosa, sent across the line first by an Orica team that filled the top six. Dan Martin is already gone, a collarbone broken on a wet manhole cover, and Joaquim Rodríguez has lost time before a hill has been climbed. Today loops out along the Antrim coast and back, 220 exposed kilometres under heavy showers, for what ought to be Marcel Kittel's sprint.

   Tjallingii's last stand

   More than 200km on the attack and still the Dutchman will not sit up. With 8km left Maarten Tjallingii drops Fedi and Armee and drives on alone with thirty seconds, the mountains jersey already his.

2. 2At the line

   Kittel bullets past Bouhanni

   Out of the tight left-hander at 300 metres Bouhanni opens first, but Kittel gets the big gear turning and comes by on his left to win by three bike lengths — the German's first Giro stage, and a stage win now in all three Grand Tours.
