At the start
Kittel does not start in Bari
The race has flown to Italy and the man who won both sprints has not come with it — Marcel Kittel is a non-starter, and the hierarchy of the fast men is suddenly open again. Michael Matthews keeps pink, Alessandro Petacchi sits eight seconds back. Today is the softest day of the whole Giro: 112 kilometres, a start after lunch, eight laps of Bari city centre, and rain forecast onto its tight corners.

Fearing the rain-slicked city-centre circuit, the peloton rides all day at a crawl while Paolini, Evans, Petacchi and Eisel plead with race director Vegni. The bell rings and the GC times are taken with one lap, 8.3km, still to run.

Their fears prove right: Cannondale go down on a wide corner while leading out Viviani and scatter the sprint. Nacer Bouhanni threads the wreckage to win from Nizzolo and Veelers, while Matthews keeps pink without contesting a metre of it.
