The bunch is too slow
Five Italians, only one of them from a WorldTour team, still have two and a half minutes with forty-five to go on a stage made for the sprinters. Lotto-Soudal and Trek are on the front; Orica, Sky and Lampre are nowhere.

Panic behind, and Porte's puncture
Confidence has turned to panic and BMC and AG2R start launching riders out of the field. Then Richie Porte punctures late and loses time he cannot afford to Contador and Aru.

Boem beats the sprinters' teams
Marangoni jumps with 1.6 kilometres left and it looks good until Malaguti and Boem organise the chase. Round the final corner Nicola Boem is first across to him, and first to open his sprint.
